I sent this photo to a birder friend of mine who identified it for me. The Northern Shrike is an uncommon visitor to the northern US. It has a strongly hooked bill and is quite vicious with the prey that it hunts and kills.
This single bird is the only one I saw on my 12/27 early morning hike. |
